Your Laundry Is Clean. But What Did You Clean It With?
The everyday chemicals we stopped questioning—and why I started looking closer.

If you're anything like me, there's a good chance you've been buying the same laundry detergent for years.
Maybe it's the brand your mom used.
Maybe it's the scent you've associated with "clean" since you were a kid.
Maybe you don't even remember when you started buying it. You just know that when the bottle gets low, you buy another one.
That's what we do.
We stick with what we're familiar with.
Until one day, something makes us stop and ask:
Why?
For me, that question started years ago in a college classroom.
My professor went on a bit of a rampage one day about something that, at the time, seemed almost ridiculous.
He asked why glass cleaner had to be blue.
Why does laundry detergent need to smell like something?
Why do we need our shampoo to smell like one thing, our conditioner another, our body wash another, our deodorant another, our perfume another—and then put scented laundry products on the clothes we wear all day?
And then there's the air freshener in the house.
The one in the car.
The candle.
The room spray.
The dryer sheets.
The list goes on.
I remember thinking about it.
And then, honestly, I went on with my life.
Because that's what we do.
We don't question things that feel normal.
We've been taught that blue means clean.
That bubbles mean clean.
That a strong fragrance means fresh.
That if our clothes smell like they were just washed three days later, that's a good thing.
But somewhere along the way, I started wondering:
What if "clean" and "scented" aren't the same thing?
And more importantly—
What are we actually putting on our bodies every single day?
The laundry detergent problem isn't just about laundry.
Think about what your laundry detergent touches.
Your underwear.
Your pajamas.
Your sheets.
Your towels.
Your workout clothes.
The clothes you wear for eight, ten, sometimes twelve hours a day.
And unlike a household cleaner that gets wiped off a countertop, whatever remains on your clothing can stay in contact with your skin for hours.
That doesn't automatically mean your detergent is dangerous.
That's important.
Chemicals aren't inherently bad simply because they have chemical names. Everything around us—including water—is made of chemicals.
The better question is:
What are the ingredients, what do they do, how much are we exposed to, and what happens after they leave our washing machine?
That's where things get interesting.
So what's actually in conventional laundry detergent?
Take a look at the ingredient list for a conventional detergent and you'll find ingredients performing very different jobs.
There are surfactants, which help lift dirt and oils from fabric.
There are enzymes that break down things like proteins and starches.
There are builders and water-conditioning ingredients.
There may be preservatives.
Optical brighteners.
Colorants.
Solvents.
And then there's the one that gets my attention the most:
fragrance.
Tide, for example, lists surfactants, enzymes, preservatives, optical brighteners, colorants, solvents and fragrance among the ingredients used across its detergent formulas.
And Gain openly markets its Original detergent around its long-lasting fragrance, including fragrance capsules designed to continue releasing scent during wear.
Which brings me right back to my professor.
Why does clean have to smell like something?
The fragrance conversation
This is where I think we need to slow down.
"Fragrance" isn't necessarily one single chemical.
It can represent a mixture of many fragrance ingredients, and consumers aren't necessarily given the identity of every individual component simply by seeing the word "fragrance" on a label.
Researchers have found that household detergents can be a meaningful source of exposure to fragrance allergens.
And studies examining fragranced cleaning products have detected numerous volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, in the air after products are used.
One study examining conventional and "green" cleaning products identified hundreds of VOCs across the products tested. The researchers found that conventional products generally produced more VOC emissions than green products, particularly compared with fragrance-free products. But—and this is important—some green fragranced products also emitted chemicals of concern.
So "green" doesn't automatically mean harmless.
And "natural" doesn't automatically mean safe.
The ingredient list still matters.
And then there's the environment.
Every time we wash a load of clothes, we're not simply putting detergent into a washing machine.
We're sending the resulting wastewater down the drain.
Most wastewater goes through treatment, and that treatment can remove or reduce many cleaning-product ingredients. But not everything behaves the same way.
The EPA specifically evaluates detergent surfactants based on characteristics including aquatic toxicity and how quickly they biodegrade.
Some surfactants can be toxic to aquatic organisms.
Certain older detergent ingredients, such as nonylphenol ethoxylates, have been a particular environmental concern because they can break down into nonylphenol, a chemical that is persistent, bioaccumulative and highly toxic to aquatic organisms.
And phosphates?
They can contribute to excess nutrients in waterways, which can fuel algae growth and reduce oxygen available to aquatic life. That's one reason many jurisdictions have restricted or banned inorganic phosphate builders in laundry detergents.
So the story doesn't end when the washing machine drains.
But here's where I'm not interested in going.
I'm not interested in telling you that everything you've used for the last 30 years is poisoning you.
I'm not interested in fear-mongering.
And I'm definitely not interested in pretending that every conventional laundry detergent is equally dangerous.
That's not what the evidence says.
What I am interested in is asking a better question:
Do we need to expose ourselves to something simply because we've always done it?
That's a different question.
And I think it's a pretty important one.
We don't just use one scented product.
This was the part of my professor's lecture that stuck with me.
Think about your average day.
You brush your teeth with scented toothpaste.
You shower with body wash.
You use shampoo.
Conditioner.
Deodorant.
Maybe lotion.
Maybe perfume.
Then you put on clothes washed in scented detergent.
Maybe you added fabric softener.
Maybe dryer sheets.
Maybe scent beads.
You get into a car with an air freshener.
You walk into a house with a candle burning.
You spray something on the couch because it doesn't smell "fresh."
Individually, each exposure might seem insignificant.
But we're not exposed to one product.
We're surrounded by products.
Researchers studying fragranced consumer products have documented exposure across laundry products, cleaning products, personal-care products and air fresheners, and have investigated reported associations with symptoms including respiratory problems, headaches, asthma and skin problems.
That doesn't mean every person exposed will experience those effects.
It means the bigger question is worth asking:
How much fragrance are we voluntarily adding to our environment?
So what did I change?
I started paying attention.
Not obsessing.
Not throwing everything in my house into the trash.
Just paying attention.
I started looking at ingredients.
I started questioning products I'd never thought twice about.
And eventually, I started experimenting with alternatives.
One of the laundry detergents I've personally landed on is Truly Free.
I've tried several plant-based and more environmentally conscious laundry products, and this is the one I've personally found to strike the balance I care about: it actually cleans my clothes and sheets well, I like the scent, and I appreciate the refill-style packaging.
But even here, I'm not going to tell you that "plant-based" means chemical-free.
It doesn't.
In fact, Truly Free itself explicitly says that "chemical-free" isn't a meaningful claim because everything is made of chemicals. The company publishes its ingredient information and says its signature scent includes nature-identical synthetic fragrance components.
And I appreciate that distinction.
Because that's really the point of all of this.
Know what you're buying.
Know what you're putting on your skin.
Know what you're washing down the drain.
And decide what matters to you.
This isn't about perfection.
I'm not going to suddenly become the woman who makes every cleaning product in her kitchen from baking soda and vinegar.
I still want my laundry to get clean.
I still want my sheets to smell fresh.
I still want products that work.
I'm just not willing to assume that something is good for me simply because I've used it for twenty years.
And maybe that's the bigger lesson.
We don't have to throw everything away.
We don't have to become afraid of everything.
We just have to become curious.
Because sometimes the most important question isn't:
"Is this product dangerous?"
It's:
"Do I know what's in it—and am I comfortable using it every day?"
That's the question I'm starting to ask.
And laundry detergent is only the beginning.
In the next part, we're going ingredient by ingredient.
We'll look at the surfactants, preservatives, optical brighteners, fragrance chemicals, enzymes, dyes and other common detergent ingredients—what each one actually does, what the research says about potential health effects, what we know about environmental impact, and which concerns are supported by evidence versus internet fear.
Because if we're going to change what we put in our homes, I don't want to do it based on fear.
I want to do it based on facts.
